Designated places of assuming Ehram
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had fixed Dhul Hulaifa as the Miqat for the people of Medina; Al-Juhfa for the people of Sham; and Qarn Ul-Manazil for the people of Najd; and Yalamlam for the people of Yemen. So, these (above mentioned) are the Mawaqit for all those living at those places, and besides them for those who come through those places with the intention of performing Hajj and `Umra, and whoever lives within these places should assume Ihram from his dwelling place, and similarly, the people of Mecca can assume lhram from Mecca. (Sahih Al Bukhari: 1526)
Dhul Hulaifah: is also known as Abyar Ali or Abaar Ali (the wells of Ali). It is located a little over 6 miles away from Madina. It is situated for pilgrims and travelers of the North traveling from Madinah.
Dhat Irq: is for the pilgrims coming from the direction of Iraq. It’s some 67 kilometers (42 miles) away in Mecca.
Qarn Al Manazil: now known as As-Sayl. This is for the pilgrims coming from the Najd and the East. It is situated in the vicinity of the city of Taif.
Yalamlam: also known as As-Sadiah. This is for the journey of those going to Mecca coming from Yemen along this route (south). It is about 48 kilometers (30 miles) from Mecca.
Al Juhfah: is today an abandoned village northwest of Makkah near the town of Rabigh. Pilgrims from Syria and its direction bring their Ihraam from Rabigh.
When taking a flight, passengers must assume Ihraam and only perform Niyyah at the meeqat boundary. The meeqat is announced by some airlines before they reach the designated meeqat boundary, while others simply show a message on the screen 10 to 20 minutes prior to the meeqat.
